JOVICSS Celebrates Jamaica's 63rd Independence on Vancouver Island

The vibrant sounds of reggae, the aroma of jerk chicken, and the warm spirit of community filled the air as Jamaicans on Vancouver Island Canadian Services Society Society (JOVICSS) hosted our annual Jamaica Independence Day celebration on Sunday, August 4, 2025.

Held in Victoria, BC, the event brought together Jamaicans, friends of Jamaica, and supporters from diverse cultural backgrounds to commemorate 63 years of Jamaica’s independence. Attendees enjoyed traditional music by DJ Fresh, delicious authentic Jamaican food prepared by Hazel, games like dominoes and ludo, and cultural displays that paid tribute to Jamaica’s rich heritage and global influence.

The celebration also served as a meaningful opportunity to introduce our growing organization, highlight the importance of unity, and invited the wider community to volunteer, support, or become members of JOVICSS.

We extend heartfelt thanks to:

  • Our donors for their generous contributions

  • Our volunteers for their hard work and dedication Avril, Alicia, Dianna, Angella, Hazel, Barbara, and our host for the evening Denneisha.

  • Ali with his amazing performance for bringing the vibe and flavor of Jamaica

  • And everyone who showed up and represented the spirit of “Out of Many, One People”

As we look ahead, we’re excited to continue building bridges and sharing our culture through upcoming events, including our 2nd annual Boonoonoonus Christmas Charity Dinner in December, Jamaica Day in February and our Jerk Festival in Summer 2026.
